This section organizes, for the first time, all the data the Society has collected over the years on Hubbell/Hubbles who were slave owners and African Americans who, once freed, adopted the Hubbell/Hubble surname. The original lists of African American Hubbells were published in the unclassified section of the 1995 and 2017 Genealogies. However, the bulk of the data in this database has been compiled, recently, from a variety of sources. The genesis of this database originated from a presentation that Hilbert R. Hubble gave at the Houghton Reunion in 2019. Subsequently, Rick Hubble folded into Hilbert’s effort his research on slavery in Connecticut, Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri. Each individual has been assigned a unique number in brackets [AFxxx].
This database is our first attempt at cataloguing all African American Hubbells and is by no means complete. There are many individuals and state archives that still need to be researched. Portions of this database were printed in the 2024 Annual.
